Torin (“Symphony Sid”) is born in New York City.

The son of immigrants Isidore and Caroline Torin, Symphony Sid Torin becomes a disc jockey in New York and New Jersey, moves to Boston in 1951 to work for WBMS, and is credited with popularizing of jazz in the city, often broadcasting live performances from local clubs. After earlier calling New York City’s 52nd Street the Jazz Capital of the World, Sid calls Massachusetts Avenue “Boston’s 52nd Street.” Torin moves to WCOP, then moves back to New York in 1957, and to Florida in 1972. He dies in Miami on September 14, 1984.
